Landslide in Nawalapitiya Claims Lives of Three Family Members

An unfortunate incident occurred today (28) in the Nawalapitiya, Old Railway Yard Road area, where three members of the same family lost their lives due to a landslide amidst the torrential rains lashing the Nawalapitiya region.

Nawalapitiya Police have confirmed that those who lost their lives were the wife, her mother-in-law, and a three-month-old infant who were in the house at the time of the accident. Despite strenuous efforts by residents and police officers to rescue them, the attempt proved futile.

Following the landslide that fell on the house due to heavy rain, the bodies of the deceased have now been placed at the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Nawalapitiya Divisional Secretary Ms. Ramya Jayasundara further stated that due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, a total of 05 deaths have been reported from the Nawalapitiya area alone, and steps have been taken to relocate nearly 50 affected families to safe camps.
