Complaint Filed with Bribery Commission
The Jana Aragalaya Alliance today (14) lodged a formal complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), alleging that former Minister Tiran Alles had engaged in illegal offshore investments in violation of Sri Lanka’s Exchange Control Act.
According to the complaint, the former minister is accused of investing £1,550,000 in Banham Ventures Limited and £1,400,100 in Bromption Properties, both companies registered in the British Virgin Islands.
Speaking at the occasion, Jana Aragalaya Executive Committee member Duminda Nagamuwa stated that these financial dealings were previously revealed in the Pandora Papers released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in 2023.
Information Withheld
Nagamuwa further emphasised that if these offshore holdings were not declared in the official asset and liability statements submitted by Tiran Alles during his tenure as a minister, it would constitute a serious legal violation warranting investigation. He added that, if necessary, the alliance would formally request confirmation from the ICIJ to verify these claims.
The Jana Aragalaya Alliance stressed that this complaint marks the beginning of a crucial investigation into illicit offshore investments that have severely affected the national economy. They urged the authorities to treat the matter with urgency, noting that the National People's Power (NPP) had already raised these allegations during its election campaigns. The alliance expressed hope that the new government would expedite investigations into this high-profile case
