Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was remanded yesterday, has been moved from the Welikada Prison hospital to the National Hospital in Colombo due to health complications, sources revealed.
Medical assessments had reportedly advised specialist care that was unavailable at the prison’s medical facility, prompting the urgent transfer. Wickremesinghe, admitted initially with multiple health issues, is said to be under close medical observation.
Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed strong disappointment over the imprisonment, calling it an act of “political revenge.”
Speaking to the media after visiting Wickremesinghe at Welikada Prison earlier today, Rajapaksa said the former leader appeared calm and unbothered by his situation.
“As far as I see, Ranil Wickremesinghe does not care much about what has happened to him. In politics, we sometimes have to face these kinds of situations,” Rajapaksa remarked.
The veteran politician further stressed that imprisoning former Presidents over minor incidents was “unfair and unacceptable.”
“This is not right. It is wrong to imprison former Presidents who have held executive powers. Clearly, this is nothing more than an act of revenge by the present government,” he added.
Rajapaksa also urged the media to question the government’s actions and stand by public opinion.
“As leaders, we love the people, and in return, the people love us. That is why many came to see me when I faced challenges,” he said.
The unfolding situation has stirred heated political debate, with supporters of both camps closely watching the developments surrounding Wickremesinghe’s health and legal battles.
