Tensions Erupt at Mullivaikkal Remembrance Event in Wellawatte

A tense situation arose this morning (May 18) during a public gathering organized in the Wellawatte area of Colombo to commemorate Tamil civilians who died during the final stages of the war in 2009 in the Mullivaikkal region.

The memorial event was held near the beachside area in front of Alexandra Road. Participants gathered carrying white flowers in remembrance of those who were killed, injured, or went missing during the final phase of the armed conflict.

According to reports, the situation turned heated when another group allegedly attempted to disrupt the peaceful commemoration. Police were present at the location, and footage circulating on social media shows law enforcement trying to disperse the opposing group.

The event was organized to reflect on the suffering endured by the Tamil population during the closing chapter of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009. Further information regarding the incident is expected to emerge as investigations continue.

Human rights organizations continue to express varied perspectives on the final military operations in the Mullivaikkal area, making it a topic of ongoing debate and scrutiny.
