Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of political activist Dan Priyasad, police confirmed. The fatal shooting took place in Wellampitiya on the night of April 22, sending shockwaves through the local political landscape.
Background: Rising Political Tensions
Dan Priyasad, a known political activist and a candidate representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) for the upcoming Local Government elections, was contesting from the Kolonnawa Urban Council. He had been actively involved in party activities and was attending a social gathering at a housing complex in Wellampitiya when the incident occurred.
Details of the Incident
According to police, two unidentified individuals arrived at the scene on a motorcycle and opened fire at Priyasad using a pistol. After carrying out the attack, the suspects fled the area on the same motorcycle. Priyasad, who sustained critical injuries, was immediately rushed to the Colombo National Hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
Police Response and Investigation
Two special police teams have been assigned to the case, and investigators are currently analyzing CCTV footage obtained from the vicinity of the shooting. Initial findings suggest that this was a targeted attack.
Rivalry at the Heart of the Motive
Police informed the court that there had been a longstanding rivalry between Priyasad and two individuals, a father and son, who are now under a court-imposed travel ban preventing them from leaving the country. While their exact involvement in the shooting has not been confirmed, authorities are treating them as persons of interest based on prior conflicts with the victim.
