Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, stated that all remaining passports scheduled for issuance will be issued within a month.
During the first meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs of the Tenth Parliament held th minister said that a 24-hour passport issuance service is up and running.
Meanwhile , a passport issuance office will be established in Jaffna once the necessary printing equipment is procured, and the number of passports issued at local council offices will be doubled. said the Minister.
E- Passports
Although the government has announced that e-passports are coming, there have been some delays. They had initially aimed to start issuing them in late 2024 or early 2025, but implementation has taken longer than expected.
Currently, the Department of Immigration and Emigration is in the final stages of preparing the infrastructure for the launch. Once the system is fully operational, it will significantly streamline travel for Sri Lankans, offering enhanced security features and a more modern passport design
