Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali has ordered the remand of a police sergeant from Giribawa Police until the 18th, following a complaint by a husband alleging that the officer demanded a bribe of Rs. 20,000 to execute an arrest warrant against his wife.
According to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), the complainant, a father of three, had reported that his wife had left home with their children. He had filed a maintenance case, and an arrest warrant had been issued against her. However, Sergeant T. Rajaguru, who was serving at the Giribawa Police, allegedly demanded a bribe to proceed with the arrest.
The bribery commission’s report further stated that the officer threatened the husband, warning that if he did not pay the bribe, legal action would be taken against him for an unrelated offense.
Concerned about the unlawful demand, the complainant reported the incident to the bribery commission. A subsequent raid led to the sergeant’s arrest.
Given the ongoing investigations, the bribery commission requested the court to remand the suspect. Taking all factors into account, the magistrate ordered the sergeant to be held in remand custody and instructed the bribery commission to present the progress of the investigation at the next hearing on the 18th.
