Caravan Fresh bakery group food storage sealed!
The main food storage at Hendala, Wattala of Madina Foods Private Ltd, which maintains a well-known network of bakeries in Sri Lanka under the name Caravan Fresh was found on inspection of storing expired 17.5 tons of bakery and cake ingredients and has been sealed.
Major general Shantha Dissanayaka, chairman of consumer affairs authority has said that evidence
was revealed that this racket had been going on for a period of time, thus poisoning the public by removing the label of expired products in a very clever manner. On this occasion, food of 17.5 tons including bakery ingredients and ingredients used to prepare cakes had been found. Apart from it, expired custard powder, wall corn used to make bread, muffin mickeys, types of butter used to prepare pastries, flour used to make samosa, cake ingredients, vanilla, a stock of apple drinks were included in the expired stock of foods. The market value of these goods has been calculated at about Rs. 15 million.
Madina Foods, in addition to are involved in food production and also maintain the network of restaurants and further import bakery produce and cake ingredients from countries such as America, Dubai and Germany and is an establishment which supplies them to the market and leading hotels in Colombo.
Support was enlisted from police special task force for the raid conducted and the chairman has stated that according to the consumer protection act a legal case would be filed in future against the institution that has been sealed.
