6 'brokers' who grabbed commissions to get driving licenses ... nabbed at Werahera!
Six 'brokers' who were supposed to grab commissions from persons who were coming to motor traffic department from far away locations to secure various services in order to facilitate matters for them were taken into custody by police yesterday (30). On instructions of ministry of state defence, a decoy was employed under direct supervision and in the operations yesterday (30), these six 'brokers' were arrested.
These 'brokers' had spoken to the decoy when he was at Werahera motor traffic department premises
and had told him that the required services could be secured across their confederates the state officers and had solicited a sum of Rs. 10,000; on which occasion police officers who were dressed in civil uniform had apprehended the 'brokers', a high official of police headquarters stated.

When the arrested 'brokers' were interrogated, it was revealed that a sum of Rs. 10,000 was taken by them to secure the driving license, medical certificates and other various services in a short period of time and that some officers of the motor traffic department would be co-operating with them, that officer further mentioned. Apart from all that, these 'brokers' used to obtain Rs. 3500, Rs. 5000 and Rs. 7500 as commission in order to extend the period in the driving license, to obtain a temporary driving license and to have the applicants pass the practical test, that police officer further said. The anti corruption unit of Nugegoda and law enforcement centre of Nugegoda division are conducting further inquiries in this regard.
