Mrs. Manel Kumari Amarakoon, a 52 year old mother of three children living close to Gal Vihara in
new town, Polonnaruwa had thus give over her life to the staff in attendance at ward three at Polonnaruwa general hospital while undergoing treatment at Anuradhapura basic hospital day before yesterday (4) evening ... all because of sheer neglect.
new town, Polonnaruwa had thus give over her life to the staff in attendance at ward three at Polonnaruwa general hospital while undergoing treatment at Anuradhapura basic hospital day before yesterday (4) evening ... all because of sheer neglect.
Having gone for treatment for a wound which has become worse as a result of the sugar level in her body going up, a part of flesh was removed from the sole of one of her feet and while being treated for that wound had been neglectfully injected with a vaccine of medicine meant to be given to a sick female undergoing treatment for breast cancer and under such conditions she had become sick. For further treatment she was directed to Anuradhapura basic hospital.
This patient in fact has been to to Polonnaruwa hospital in very good health condition; however after the cancer control vaccine was administered she was reduced to skin and bones and has reached a stage where she had to be given artificial respiration. Her son said that the reason for his mother's death was the sheer neglect of those serving at ward three at Polonnaruwa government hospital.
"Mother was first admitted to hospital because of a minor wound in her foot which resulted in a lighter exploding. A surgery was performed for that injury. That surgery too has been mishandled. A part of a sole in the foot which also had a plantar callus was unnecessarily detached. Because that wound was not getting better, mother suffered a lot. Later as it came to a stage where mother's leg had to be amputated father took great effort to avoid that situation. She was taken to Kandy and was cured to a large extent but as the wound did not totally heal she was once again admitted to Polonnaruwa hospital. It was during that time that she was given the vaccine injected for the woman with breast cancer who was in the adjoining bed. During this process a nurse in service at ward three had told that a mistake was done when father himself was present there saying, 'All this happened because of an error of just two letters in the name of the medicine that sir wrote'. Everybody on duty that day in that ward are aware of the crime that was committed on mother. After mother was administered that medicine, mother had told father that she felt smoke coming out from her urinary tract and from the rear part of her body and that she is experiencing a strange feeling of smarting. She has said that her whole body was as in fire.
After that injection was given, even pillows and things like that on her bed were quickly removed. After mother was moved away from that place a nurse had come and asked whether the patient had died. Mother has overheard it and had reprimanded her saying, 'No .. not yet died!' On a day that father visited mother, the staff at the ward had told that pillows etcetera on the bed where she was because a bacteria had invaded the place. In order to cover up their mistake, various lies, nonsensical things were created. However, it came out from their mouths that a wrong injection was administered to mother.
Mother had no sickness to die as such. Mother was given an injection and killed her. After that wrong injection mother suffered from a seizure. Doctors at Anuradhapura hospital said after examination that the nervous system of mother's brain had died. Mother who went to hospital in good shape to take medicine for a wound ultimately ended up in skin and bones. It appeared as every bone could be separated easily. She was unable to take any food or drink. She finally left all of us because of the staff of ward three of Polonnaruwa hospital who treated mother without any consideration on a number of instances".
The husband of the deceased found fault with doctors of the said ward for having been responsible for injecting the wrong vaccine to his wife and in consequence said that written appeals to the minister of health, director general of health services, the president and those relevant.
