A discussion is still taking place about the issue these days whether presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's citizenship is till dual citizen of Sri Lankan citizen only. Though it was confirmed in court about dual citizenship secured by Gotabhaya in 2005 over the petition filed by Wiyangoda and professor Thenuwara, at a later date documents to the effect that since his dual citizenship was invalidated in 2019 being still not specific has thus being the crux of this issue.

Accordingly, he even went to the extent of displaying Gotabhaya's American passport with the seal 'cancel' referring to a certificate and invalidation of citizenship. Minister Mangala Samaraweera who responds in this context says that American administration does not use 'cancel' as an official seal as such. He then goes on to say that it should be stated as 'cancelled' in past tense and that a deception has been made. As such, he informs that Ali Sabri has misled the public.
