Further, steps were taken by the staff of doctors of Anuradhapura teaching hospital to summon the specialist consultant supposed to have carried out the operation concerned and to launch
an inquiry yesterday (19) in connection with the said death.
an inquiry yesterday (19) in connection with the said death.
The deceased is a 26 year old boy residing close to Anuradhapura town. As a strong suspicion has flared up about the boy's death, the post-mortem was conducted by a specialist consultant of Anuradhapura teaching hospital.
It was concluded three months ago that an urgent kidney surgery had to be done in order the serve the young man's life and therefore the mother of the boy has come forward to donate one of her healthy kidneys to save her son's life. For this transplant to be performed a sum of Rs. 6 lakhs was necessary and on the contributions of various societies, organisations, associates and relatives it was possible to secure the funds after which the operation was carried out at a well-known private hospital in central province.
After the operation of the kidney transplant the boy has returned to the house in Anuradhapura last week and on returning home he has all of a sudden become serious as a result of which he was once again admitted to Anurdhapura teaching hospital where he has passed away day before yesterday (18). To find out the cause of death of the boy his relatives have requested for a post-mortem inquiry and on that occasion it was revealed that an infection has crept into his brain.
Some of the relatives of the deceased had this to say in connection with the said death: "When the doctor said that an infection has made its way into his brain, we had some suspicion over the death. We told the doctor that that could not happen as a kidney transplant has been done. Later after cutting opening the body he said that there are no signs that a kidney has been transplanted and that the kidney he got by birth is damaged. As such, an open verdict was given day before yesterday (18). Later, another post-mortem was carried out on 19th at the hospital mortuary. The specialist doctor supposed to have done the kidney transplant was present at that inquiry held in the private hospital.
He had shown that the kidney was transplanted. So beyond that neither medical science nor any other person can be challenged. The judicial medical officer said that the kidney was transplanted. What the doctor who carried out the kidney transplant aid was, "Now right ... good, no problem. The patient will be alright". But the child lost his life. The mother lost a kidney. Rs. 26 lakhs we managed to find went in the waters, they said.
