In the end, 'Tikira' embraces death

The sorrowful news of "Tikira" the elephant about whom foreign news accused relevant parties for having made the elephant participate in the perahera during the Kandy Esala perahera sometime back without paying scant respect to its health condition has passed away. 

After the initial tour of the this she-elephant became a public phenomenon of animal cruelty, the
excuse brought forward in that connection was that the animal was used in the tour concerned was connected to the perahera under reference only for the purpose of carrying out a vow. 

Tikira, her name ... was in fact suffering from a food absorption problem and as  a result her aged look was indeed predominant. After this she-elephant was made to participate in the perahera, photographs were published on a high scale in international media. And that incident created a great uproar. Though many a social media spotlighted the situation, what authorities of Sri Lanka always wanted was to issue comments in a manner which ultimately safeguards the owner of the animal. 

While the age span of an Asian elephant is approximately 50 - 60 years ... Tikira has carried out her duties till she was 70 years old. However, the opinion of the majority of people was that it is not suitable to demand service from an elephant upto that  age. Whatever it is, what transpired was the attention drawn to authorities and politicians being introduced an age of retirement for tame elephants.
