Toad by the name of Charles -- butterfly by the name of Trump -- spider by the name of Mandela -- sea anemone by the name of Buddha!
A dialogue is circulating within social media these days about geckos being named with names of Sri Lankan national heroes. What MP Mr. Wimal Weeravansha said in parliament in this context was that this is a serious humiliation and that gecko-names should be given not for old national heroes but for people like Ranil, Mangala. Whatever it is, when delving further into this matter, names of newly-discovered animal species linked to famous people such as these had been a process being carried out from a long period of time within scope of biology and that no social attitude or comparison to the
person concerned in connection with the relevant animal was taken into account.
person concerned in connection with the relevant animal was taken into account.
Lord Buddha's name was given as Buddhaites Diener to identify a certain sea anemone and that was in 1895. Even religious leaders like Confucius has been given to names of dinosaurs. Nelson Mandela's name has been given to a spider while Indira Gandhi's name has been given to a bird. In recent times, well-known names of characters such as Obama has been given to new species of geckos and over ten animal species have been given names of fish, birds and spiders. Taking such things into consideration, there is a gecko by the name Obama. A toad has been named with prince Charles ... heir to the throne. Trump's name has been given to a species of butterflies.
When taken from this viewpoint, using names of special persons as biological names for animals; it could be understood in the context of biological useage ... it could well be assumed that it is for the purpose of remembering the name concerned. A list of names where ancient and modern characters in history are are depicted is shown below
