No motor vehicles on some Colombo roads next Sunday (14)
It was reported recently that Colombo municipal council in collaboration with The Netherlands embassy have organised a Car-free Day (CFD) in Sri Lanka for the first time. As such, it was revealed at a media briefing that the Car-free CMB programme is expected to be held from morning 6 to 12 in the afternoon on July 14th, 2019 from Independence Mawatha to Green Path.
On that occasion, persons could join in with this programme as pedestrians or push-bicycle riders or
skateboard riders which incidentally are not operated by machines as such and Mrs. Rosy Senanayaka, mayoress of Colombo said that there is opportunity for walking, engaging in physical exercises or sports within the said area. Green Path upto public library roundabout, a part of S.W.W. Kannangara Mawatha and Independence Mawatha area will come under this programme and it was mentioned that traffic signs would be displayed clearly as to what alternate roads that could be utilised by those using motor vehicles.
In the same way, no admission fees would be levied for Car-free CMB programme and it was stated that those who participate in the programme could visit Good Market premises and purchase any items, to listen to music at Green Path and even watch movies . Apart from this, exercises, yoga exercises and other physical wellbeing activities have been organised.
It was revealed here that the ambassador, Mrs. Joanne Doornewaard expressing her ideas in that connection said that this endeavour was to motivate the public towards a healthy-style of living. In the meantime, what mayoress, Mrs. Rosy Senanayaka said was that necessary steps would be launched to continue with this programme at other locations in Colombo.
