Mount Lavinia army operation go to search about money-racket ... not to look for terrorists
Police media spokesman explained matters at a news briefing about a video which pervaded the social media about the combined operation by the army and police launched in Mount Lavinia yesterday (11). News was published giving information that this is not revealed to the media and is something that took place close to a McDonald restaurant in Mount Lavinia. He also mentioned that
the referred to operation was not one of cornering members of a terrorist group as such.
On information received by the army about a racket where money of a foreign country is being illegally exchanged with money in this country, officers of Colombo South police anti-corruption unit have combined with the army, police say. A decoy was deployed for this purpose and the bundle of money concerned was got down to Mount Lavinia after which the person was taken into custody.
On information extracted from him, police managed to get at three suspects in Kalutara, Kirullapona and Kohuwala areas plus two cars. The value of this foreign money is Rs. 48,700 as marked while the local value totals upto 2.5 million. Police media spokesman, Mr. Ruwan Gunasekera said that an inquiry is underway by police to find out validity of these foreign cash notes and as to who brought this money to this country and whether any money laundering has taken place.
