J'Pura Science lecturer drives car in Maharagama under liquor - knocks three vehicles - kills woman on road!
A senior lecturer who was driving under the stupor of liquor in Erawwala area along Maharagama - Piliyandala bus route last Friday night has tried to beat a retreat after running over a woman on the pavement and at that moment had in the process knocked down two three-wheelers and a motor cycle parked nearby injuring those in those vehicles, finally coming to a halt with the vehicle concerned toppling into a closeby paddy field.

Computer Science at Sri Jayawardenepura University University. It was 66 year age-old woman by the name of Danwattha Liyanage Podinona residing in Ranketha Pedesa, Wijaya Mawatha, Erawwala.

At the moment of the accident, it was confirmed by police inspection that the lecturer had been highly intoxicated. First of all the jeep which was travelling towards Piliyandala from Maharagama had met with this accident by knocking down the woman and then struck two three-wheelers and the two wheels had turned up and had toppled towards the middle of the road. Subsequently it has struck the motor cycle which came from the direction of Piliyandala and after getting stuck in the culvert near a paddy field when the person who came riding the motor cycle has got thrown into a stream with water flowing while the jeep which has toppled simultaneously has stopped after falling into a field; witnesses to the incident have mentioned.
The person who came on the motor cycle and the woman run over by the jeep were admitted to Kalubowila Hospital for treatment; but even at the time of admission of the woman she had already passed away while the motor cyclist has suffered serious injury to one of his legs and the spine. Severe damage was observed in the case of the motor cycle and one three-wheeler. The deceased woman had gone on some journey in the company of her husband in the three-wheeler and while heading home three-wheeler had been parked by the side of the road. She has crossed the road and having bought a loaf of bread from the shop has when trying to cross the road once again has faced this accident.
After this lecturer Terrence Ananda Edirisuriya from Main Street, Attidiya, Dehiwala who was responsible for this mishap was produced before Nugegoda Additional Magistrate, Mrs. Ramani Kularatna ... the suspect lecturer has promised to pay Rs. one lakh to the deceased woman and Rs. one lakh to the casualty. The magistrate has ordered police to invalidate the driving licence of the suspect lecturer till the court case is heard and finished. The magistrate has also ordered that he be released on two sureties amounting to Rs. one lakh each.
