commercial agreements as a player and positions of associations are taboo for the next 2 years.
The general manager of ICC anti-corruption unit Alex Marshal and the group arrived at this conclusion some months before this after surveying information revealed by the lengthy documentary programme exposed by Al Jazeer channel about Sri Lanka's cricket corruption. Recordings of discussions with bookmakers about 'match-fixing' by former captain Angelo Matthews and players such as Sachitra Senanayaka, Vanindu Hasaranga, Chathuranga de Silva, Dhanushka Gunatileka and Niroshan Dikwella and post-play convicted them of being guilty and that Jeffrey D'abrera was linked to 'pitch-fixing' appeared in the report concerned while it was further mentioned that batting prodigy and former chief of the selection committee Sanath Jayasuriya was the person who safeguarded them and was thus responsible for both 'match-fixing' and 'pitch-fixing' too. The reason to implementthis ban was that when questioned about this matter from Sanath who was the then chairman of Sri Lanka selection committee, he had been on a stand of evading the issue.
ICC Anti-Corruption Unit has charged Sanath Jayasuriya through ACU on two counts. The two clauses where Jayasuriya has violated ICC code of rules is as follows:
Clause 2.4.6 : Failing to provide accurate and complete information / or documentation requested by ACU for an inquiry; rejection of acting with co-operation towards the survey conducted by ACU without any justification.
Clause 2.4.7 : Obstructing or delaying other documents or other information or gaining unlawful access or extracting information relating to same for any possible survey that may be carried out by ACU as related to this clause.
Though an opportunity was given to him for 14 days from October 15, 2018 to provide an explanation if he was free from guilt of the abovementioned blemishes after he was notified about same, he has failed to rectify them. As such, a ban has been imposed by International Cricket Council preventing former chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket, Sanath Jayasuriya from all activities connected to the game of cricket, for a period of 2 years from last year October 15th. What is mentioned in its website is that this ban was imposed on him for having violated their anti-corruption rules.
In the meantime, Sanath Jayasuriya has released a press announcement to his fans explaining his reasons. What is stated there is that this punishment has been imposed on him for failing to provide his mobile phone SIM card and mobile phone on the stipulated date. Jayasuriya says that this punishment has been given to him for failing to hand over those items on the expected date and that allegations have not been targetted on him for corruption, exposing confidential information etc, and therefore he is not guilty of corruption.
