Sunil Shantha who played 'game' in hiding ... was hiding with daughter
Narcotics dealer Sunil Shantha was arrested when hiding in Meemure hamlet after fleeing from Colombo remand prisons and has been handed over to Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations.
His fleeing process was an instance when he was loaded into a fake prison bus which entered Welikada prison premises as if he is to be taken to court in a most shrewd manner and it is suspected
that this 'game' was activated by prison officers who had taken bribes. Sunil Shantha who thus escaped the four walls was ultimately taken into custody on operations launched by crime prevention section and police special task force officers.
This heroin magnate Sunil Shantha who escaped Welikada remand prison with the connivance of prison officers was finally taken into custody day-before-yesterday (11) by police special task force and Colombo organised crime unit while taking refuge in a dwelling in Meemure area.
The strategy for Sunil Shantha, the leading henchman of underground chieftain Makandure Madush to escape prison has been laid out by Makandure Madush, it was later revealed. Police say that heroin dealer Sunil Shantha has been in hiding with a daughter in Meemure. Thus, his 18 year old daughter by relationship by the name of Nonis was taken into custody.
After Sunil Shantha fled from prison, he had taken this daughter referred to earlier and lived in hiding in an abandoned area in Meemure. In this instance Nonis has provided all amenities necessary for him. It was last November 17th that this heroin kingpin had escaped Welikada remand prison. Duties of 8 prison officers alleged to have helped narcotics dealer Sunil Shantha have been suspended. It was last November 16th that Sunil Shantha confined to Kegalle prison was brought to Aluthkade court for a court matter. Until he was thus taken to court he was confined to Welikada remand prison during which period he has managed to make his jail escape.
It was later revealed that it incidentally was a close acquaintance of Sunil Shantha himself, a prison officer, whose work has been suspended for having come to Welikada prison in uniform in a clandestine manner and had whisked away Sunil Shantha, it was revealed at investigations.
Sunil Shantha who is supposed to be the most leading supplier of underground leader Makandure Madush had been carrying on his campaign by flaunting his powers in Aturugiriya. Sunil Shantha who was engaged in taking 'kappam' from businessmen apart from dealing in heroin was cornered in Horana 2 years before this by police anti-narcotics bureau. He was sent to prison after he was nabbed with a quantity of heroin worth Rs. 5 crores. It was when serving a jail term in connection with this heroin incident that he has made his getaway.
