Elephant tramples and kills mahout ...

at Karandeniya perahera!

A sad incident is reported of an elephant becoming aggressive during the annual perahera of Karandeniya Kolethumanana Sri Sudharshanarama Vihara around 12 in the night and dashing its mahout on the ground and thus killing him. The incident referred to has taken place when the perahera was in process in Borakanda area, Karandeniya. 

The elephant concerned has been brutal enough to lift the mahout and press him against a wall and
later trample his head too. The mahout who was admitted to hospital with severe injuries from the attack had already passed away. The deceased is one Thillekeratna aged 45  from Rideegama area, police said.

Because of this elephant which killed its mahout was behaving in an uncontrollable manner, the villagers have sprinted for their life all over the place and had then created damage to several houses as well and later was found straying around in a paddy field when a team of wild life officers and a veterinary doctor has managed to anasthesise the elephant and get it under their custody.   

The dead mahout's body is lying at Balapitiya hospital and the post mortem is supposed to be conducted today. Karandeniya police are conducting further inquiries regarding the incident. A video showing the moment when the elephant got into a frenzy, from below
