Suspicion lurks over sudden death of inmate in Welikada prison ... engaged in protest

A problematic situation has flared up as a result of the sudden death of a female inmate stationed at Welikada Prison. The deceased in this instance is a person called Mali of Wellampitiya area who was jailed because of an offence related to narcotics.

As it is suspected that this is the result of an assault, the committee for the rights of prisoners has complained that an immediate police inquiry be held in this connection. The said inmate had died last
evening (24) and it is learned that she took part in the commotion which erupted recently at Welikada Prison.

Shamila Liyanaarachchi of prisoners' rights committee has stated the following to a radio channel: " According to my knowledge, about 60 or 70 have fallen down bleeding during these protests and their prisons were changed. Some of those who were not changed were here. It is a person called Mali from Wellampitiya who has died. There is suspicion whether she has died because of an assault". What prison spokesman, prisons commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya says in connection with the incident concerned is that there is no connection between yesterday's death and the commotion which took place previously has no relevance to each other.
