A husband and wife who had entered a jewellery shop close to the bus-halt at Ruwanwella, Kegalle on the pretext of buying jewellery had surreptiously got engaged in conversation with shop-owner, in which circumstances she has managed to hide a necklace in her handkerchief.
On a complaint made, investigations carried out on the CCTV cameras fixed at the shop, the police
were able to nab the suspected couple concerned by Ruwanwella police. It was identified that the male suspect in this connection was a 24 year old resident of Kaduwela while the female suspect was 26 years old, hailing from Anuradhapura and employed at a garment factory. The said couple had committed a number of such robberies by entering jewellery shops in Kiribathgoda, Anuradhapura and several other areas on the pretext of buying gold items, police have reported.

Further, police have been able to find 9 receipts of pawn shops where they have pawned the robbed jewellery in Nittambuwa, Kirindiwela, Kurunegala and Anuradhapura. The suspects having been produced before Ruwanwella magistrate's court were remanded till 20th August, 2018.
