3 cm. stone in Gnanasara thero's kidney
Gnanasara thero who presently is under treatment being warded at Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital subsequent to the verdict given to him yesterday, Appeal Court has issued instructions to Welikada Prison superintendent to immediately take action to take him into the custody of the prison. Under such instructions though he has to be directed to prison hospital, as a surgery is to be performed on 13th, a doctor at Sri
Jayawardenepura Hospital has forthrightly declared that it is is not possible under such circumstances, this issue is to be brought forward before court today (9) and is to be settled, it is reported. The said doctor has stated that since there is a three centimetre stone in Galagodaaththe thero's kidney, a surgery is to be carried out on 13th to remove the stone.
Though prison officers have made a request for the thero to wear a jumper, it has been rejected. In respect of the incident which took place on 26th January in 2016 in connection with Galagodaaththe Gnanasara thero behaving in a manner resulting in contempt of court, according to the petition 4 charges were levelled against him by the then Homagama magistrate Mr. Ranga Dissanayaka. The said charges are as follows:
1. Addressing the judiciary without permission of the court.
2. Challenging the sovereignty of the judiciary.
3. Making an influence to court compelling that Army Intelligence officers be given bail.
4. The crown counsel Mr. Dileepa Pieris (present solicitor general) who represented to aid the attorney general in court proceedings being reprimanded and through such action disgracing the judiciary.
Appeal Court who proclaimed a verdict running into 53 pages after a lengthy court case hearing in this connection and decided that the petitioner has proved without any justified doubt his complaint against Gnanasara thero and finally deduced that the thero is guilty of all 4 charges against him.
Accordingly, Appeal Court issued a verdict of 4 years for charges 01 and 02, 06 years for charge 03, 05 years for charge 04 for rigorous imprisonment of 19 years to be completed within a period of 06 years.
Crown counsel Mr. Manohara de Silva who appeared on behalf of Gnanasara thero said that he hopes to appeal in connection with the orders and punishment enforced on his client and requested that the thero who is warded for treatment be permitted to remain there. The court which rejected the request ordered that
Gnanasara thero be immediately taken into custody of the prison.
Whatever it is, it has not been possible to transfer the thero to prison hospital from Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital because of the opposition of a doctor who says that the thero is suffering from a 3 centimetre stone in his kidney and that since it would be removed on the 13th the thero is to remain there to recover and relax thereafter too. This issue would be solved today, the 9th.
