Emergency declared within the country for 10 days

Minister S.B. Dissanayaka has said that it has been decided to declare a state of Emergency for a period of 10 days within the country. The minister said this after a special discussion led by the President which was held this morning at the Presidential Secretariat with ministers

in attendance.

The curfew has been imposed in order to control the racial conflict which flared up in Kandy and the curfew has been thus declared as provisions of the law are not sufficient enough to arrest those who create trouble with the assumption that there is a possibility there would be communal disturbances in other parts of the country in the face of extending the curfew further, it has been understood.
