Sudden death of toddler at Meth Sevana Home ... a mystery!

The mysterious death of an year and four months old baby boy at Gangodawila Meth Sevana government Home has been revealed as a case of brutal murder according to medical investigations and has thus caused several issues.

The police suspect that this death has occured as a result of a blow dealt on the head of the said baby concerned  with a milking bottle, by the deceased's
mother. A speech translator's aid was secured to extract information from the deaf mother of the deceased toddler; but to no avail. This Home is utilised for the purpose of sheltering vagrant females, under court orders and this was an instance where this deaf mother and deceased toddler found occupation there. The said child was found dead last 29th inside a room with signs of bruises on the head and chest regions of the body. The child however was already dead by the time he was admitted to Colombo South Teaching Hospital.

The deaf mother of the deceased toddler was 24 years of age and was someone of a hot-tempered nature and was suffering from mental sickness, it is revealed. Prasadini Senerath, Judicial Medical Officer of Colombo South Teaching Hospital conducted the postmortem on the dead child and a verdict was given that death was caused as a result of bruises sustained from blows dealt on the head and chest regions with a blunt instrument. Statements have been secured from another mother who had shared the room with this deaf mother and a matron as well. The suspect is expected to be taken into custody, it is reported. Mirihana Police are conducting further inquiries.
