Shooting at Judge ... a stray case; those who fired were intoxicated and disposed to fighting
The incident which took place in Nallur, Jaffna where a police sergeant on duty to provide security to Mr. M. Ilanchelian, High Court Judge day-before-yesterday evening had to succumb as a result of gunshots he faced. This incident was highlighted as a threat aimed at the judge hearing the Vidya murder case and it has now been
confirmed by police as something which actually did not target the judge as such.
At the moment when one of the police officers of the 2 police officers was in the vehicle of the judge while the other officer had been travelling on a motor cycle, there had been a traffic congestion. The reason for it was that 3 drunk persons had been involved in a fracas with a crowd at the three-wheeler stand closeby.
The deceased police sergeant in the vehicle had taken steps to inquire about the traffic-block. With the necessity of getting an opportunity of finding a way for the judge's vehicle to proceed, he had moved towards where the brawl was taking place by parking his motor cycle near the stopped vehicle. At that moment itself one of the drunk persons had come to that spot and grabbed the pistol from the police sergeant's waist and had kept on firing at him.
Because of this commotion the police constable inside the vehicle too had got down from the vehicle, pushing the judge by instructing him to take care. He too in turn had shot at the drunk person and at that moment the adversary who turned towards the other person who was in the process of shooting at him had shot at him after which he had got hold of a motor cycle of a lady nearby and beat a retreat. This person who shot of course, has not aimed any gunshots at the judge.
