Ragama 77 lakhs robbery ... to buy vaccine for father, a cancer patient -- informant's confession
Police who are conducting investigations about the Ragama 77 lakhs robbery which created a sensation in the country sometime back have been informed of a son who as a result of being gripped with paternal affection and love because of financial shortage to meet requirements for the father's treatment had as a consequence tried to find that money even by resorting to crime.
This robbery took place when a gang of robbers had blocked the van carrying cash of that establishment on a clue given by an employee who incidentally was sacked by Wattala 'Kandy'
garment outlet. This employee was not connected to any crime before as such and at a conversation that took place with the leader of a gang of robbers named Jagath whom he had come across at a gambling den had put forward the proposition of robbing the money. He had mentioned that lakhs of money could be robbed and that he wanted only 5 lakhs from it. As agreed, he was able to get that 5 lakhs after the successfully conducted robbery.
Harshana, this 20 year old youngster who left school recently had spent 2 lakhs from the 5 lakhs given him by the robbers and had spent it on cancer vaccines for his father, who has been hospitalised, it was revealed at investigations. It was revealed that the gang of robbers had shared the 15 lakhs each among them and later given 6 lakhs to their informant.
He had also informed that though his father's condition has aggravated because of financial shortage, treatment was delayed and in the process because of a problem in his employment he lost his job and therefore had come to the conclusion of securing money even by getting involved in a robbery and had thereby given out this secret to the robbers. By now all suspects involved in this robbery have been nabbed and have provided the lakhs of money from places where they had hid the money, to the police. By the 3rd it has been possible to recover 40 lakhs of the stolen money, Kelaniya Police inform.
