Speculation that Peradeniya Agriculture new 'abattoir' freshers are sexually aberrated mental patients!
The phenomenon where 8 freshers of the Agricultural Faculty of Peradeniya Faculty were subjected to ragging at a rented house outside campus premises created a big sensation sometime back and by now it has been displayed that a number of characteristics portraying a mental problem pertaining to a certain category of individuals is observed.
Students who eke out a living with difficulty by spending just Rs. 10000 per mensem from the
Mahapola Fund in turn it is seen allocate some money for the purpose of renting out a new 'abattoir' and it simply indicates the fulfillment of some requirement as a remedy for some disorder which has been put into practical action and what was exposed at the court case heard yesterday was that 12 mobile phones were found in the possession of the suspect male students and that the said mobile phones contained a host of photos of the First Year freshers appearing in various postures of a sexual nature. For what purpose those photos were clicked and saved for the future in that manner has raised a question in this context.
It was also revealed from what was heard in the abandoned house and scenes that met the eyes of the Heads of Faculties were just incredible and thus indicated references to the fact that this group of suspects were those who were suffering from some abnormal, distorted sexuality. References and comments were made in courts to the effect that that house had been rented out in that manner perhaps for this very purpose with the motive of fulfilling the debased and distorted surrealism of these students.
At the time these students had rented out that house in Deluwa, Megoda Kalugamuwa area, they had concealed the fact that they were undergraduates and instead had told the owner of the house that they were a crowd of draughtsmen. The officer-in-charge of Peradeniya Police, Chief Inspector Mr. Kamal Ariyawansa who forwarded the 12 mobile phones belonging to the suspect-students to courts stated that nude photos of the victimised students who were ragged, was detected. Whatever it is, he wanted them to be forwarded to the Government Analyst in order to present them as evidence according to the law and to present a report in that connection, to which courts granted permission.
In any case, the attorney-at-law who represented the suspect-students on this occasion said that this was not a new 'abattoir' as such. What he said was that because of the problem of securing hostel facilities of Peradeniya students, the custom of renting out houses had been going on for quite some time. He mentioned that the media has given a wrong interpretation that this is a new 'abattoir'. However, according to evidence secured, the students have not been living here. The suspects had got down the freshers for ragging purposes and only for torturous activities which were to be operated there and all these premeditated activities had been concealed when renting out the house concerned from the person concerned. Though the attorney-at-law who appeared on behalf of them had once again made the request to bail them out, the magistrate dismissed his plea saying that according to the Act in operation there is no possibility to grant bail.
Kandy Court Magistrate Mr. Indika Gihan Atthanayaka ordered yesterday (2) that the 15 undergraduates who were responsible for having undressed the students and subjected them to inhuman ragging processes have been suspended by the university and inquiries are in progress to ascertain whether their studentship is to be invalidated.
