In the first Test between the touring Sri Lanka team and the host South Africa team played in Port Elizabeth, the hosts South Africa after winning the toss  batted and were all out for 286 runs on the second morning. Sri Lanka in return scored only 205 runs.South Africa in the second innings declared at 406 runs for the loss of 6 wickets
giving an impossible task of 488 runs to win on the fourth day with ample time.But Sri Lanka at the end of day four Sri Lanka were 240 runs for the loss of five wickets.

The two openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kausal Silva defied the three throng pace attack of Abbott, Philander and Rabada resolutely for over 37 overs before Dimuth Karunaratne was unfortunately run out when the total was 87..Both were unfortunate to miss out on half centuries. Kusal Mendis scored a aggressive half a century and Skipper Angelow Mathews was unbeaten on 58 while Dhanajaya de Silva was unbeaten on 09 at close of play. Sri Lanka to win need another 240 odd runs with five wickets in hand.
