Rape case which triggerred as the root cause in the film 'Usaviya nihandai'
Was the story which was the background for the film 'Usaviya nihandai' directed by Prasanna Vithanage for which an interim order was issued by courts prohibiting screening the film concerned, a true story? What is it? Curiosity has been aroused over this by now.
It was a former magistrate who revealed that nobody aware of the story at the background of the film indicating that it was linked to his identity and
he had thus secured a censorship order from courts. What he says is that there is no truth in that story. His contention is that this could harm his reputation.
What is at the back of this incident are three articles published in Ravaya Newspaper in the year 1999. The person referred to above has been a magistrate of Mahawa and by exploiting the innocence of those people connected to the cases being heard in courts had within the space of one year raped two women whose husbands were accused, the articles indicate. In the same way, Ravaya Newspaper had revealed in the final article of how this person had been involved in misappropriation of funds when connected to an insurance company matters too. The newspaper further states that although an inquiry was launched because of the fact that an accusation has been continuously targetted at a person who was holding a powerful position in the judicial field; as a reason of the powers that this person was armed with he had thrown such allegations under the carpet and the women whose lives were wrecked have still not been compensated for.
One of these women was raped at a resthouse in Gampola in the year 1999 after pointing a pistol at her head and thus frightening her. The woman concerned had the following day got herself admitted to hospital and on that occasion the tell tale signs were produced as evidence, one other article in Ravaya states. The Ravaya further reveals about an instance where a woman was taken to a room in the presence of a group of some of his henchmen-lawyers and the rape act was committed after posting two of them to guard the room.
An incident where a judge commits rape on a woman whose husband's (suspect) case is being heard is focused upon in Prasanna Vithanage's 'Usawiya nihandai' story. The experience faced by both the wife and her husband is explained to the audience across certain angles in the film. It also is revealed how an individual escapes a prison sentence which warrants punishment upto a period of 20 years after having faced an indictment in High Courts for the crime of rape which comes under the Penal Code, as a result of the powers of the Chief Justice and thus still lives in freedom as a common citizen because of that very reason.
