It has been revealed that much of the coconut oil available for purchase at retail shops in Sri Lanka are produced by mixing it with palm oil to a big extent with the motive of drawing profits as confirmed in tests conducted. Therefore steps have been taken to bring in laws to implement standards
to prevent such activities occuring in the future, Mr. A.K.D.D.D. Arandara, Director General of Consumer Services Authority informs.

"When buying coconut oil from retail shops there is no possibility of even detecting who the producer is. It is possible to find this information only when special types in bottled form are available. From investigations we have conducted, it has been revealed that a percentage of over 50 percent is actually not pure coconut oil and that on the other hand, that oil has been mixed with different types of other oil. In most cases it is palm oil that has been mixed. We hope to introduce new regulations in that connection and even by now gazette papers have been sent to the press. When issueing coconut oil to the market, it must be mentioned that if at all some kind of oil has been mixed, what its percentage is has to be mentioned", he stated at a media briefing held today.
