Lakpiya who was shot dead opposite the Mahara magistrates courts is a pupil of slain Moratuwa Saman

Yesterday after attending to a case at Mahara magistrates courts a reputed heroin businessman had

been shot dead when so many onlookers were watching. With this reputed heroin businessman his wife and child also had been present. This heroin businessman had been preparing to go home when unidentified gunmen had shot him down and fled.

The reputed heroin businessman is 35 year old “Lakpiya” alias Suresh Asanga Silva. According to police information he is a suspect in a previous murder case. Sat the time of this shooting his wife , eight year old child and another woman who was near to him had not received any injuries.

It has been reported that for this shooting four armed men had come in a white Wesel type jeep. When “Lakpiya after the case was walking towards his hybrid type vehicle on the far side of the road with his wife,child and another woman the assailants had shot him. They had used a T 56 rifle and a 8mm pistol. This had been revealed during the preliminary investigations.

The hospital sources at the Ragama hospital have added that “Lakpiya” had succumbed to gunshot injuries before admission to the hospital.

The police believe that this shooting is related to a conflict two underworld gangs had been having for some time.

The victim “Lakpiya” is supposed to have been a closest associate of underworld Moratuwa Saman it has been said.After the death of Moratuwa Saman ,Lakpiya” had got attached to another underground gang the police has added.

It is reported that a leader of a underworld gang in Ratmalana Gonakowila area and “Lakpiya” have had grudges and had been enemies.”Lakpiya” is a resident of Ratmalana. Because of this conflict “Lakpiya” had taken a house on rent in Peralanda area in Ragama to live.  These information have been revealed by the police.

About a few years back “Lakpiya” had been caught and apprehended by the officers of the police narcotics unit with 100 grams of heroin in the Wattala area.He had come as a suspect in that case to Mahara magistrate’s courts.

The police had also revealed that for a murder of a person in the Ratmalana area “Lakpiya” is suspected and that case was also pending.

The group who shot “Lakpiya” have been identified and the police have commenced investigations to arrest them.Under the instructions of the Deputy Inspector General in charge of Colombo North, Kapila Jayasekera,Assistant Superintendent of Police RL Ranaweera the investigations are conducted.
