Colombo floods and Selfie Mania

The unanticipated floods that rampaged in the very recent past with the Kelani River overflowing is said to be the biggest flood which had struck the country since 1989. At that time there were no mobile phones, Selfie or the internet for that matter in Sri Lanka. Since such facilities are currently available it is something for somebody to enquire as to whether turning the incident of the flood that influenced one into a Selfie and thus add it into his
or her memoirs is something to complain about. In the same way it is worthwhile to pose the same question whether there is anything wrong in exchanging it across the internet or the Facebook.

In this connection what some people criticised was that when spending time in sorrow because of the flood, some other people have turned it into a form of fun and are clicking Selfies which should not be done. These Selfie photos have been taken even by certain actors and actresses and those who saw those have subjected the act to serious criticism. Equally so, some prominent characters have made others take photos of themselves to give the impression that they have done something on behalf of the floods and had added it to the internet, which too came into criticism of some others.

There is of course points to say that these criticisms are right and wrong too. Shown below are some Selfie photos captured by various people during the course of the floods
