More information has been revealed about the 15 year old student who was responsible for the deaths of a mother and daughter who were killed at a crossing day-before-yesterday (16) in Dematagoda at Mount Mary area and also how
he behaved on that occasion.

On the occasion of this incident the student's mother, her younger sister, and her husband plus their two daughters ... altogether 6 of them had been inside this Hybrid-type vehicle which was being driven towards Dematagoda. At the moment when the 47 year old mother and 10 year old daughter who were going across the crossing at about 8.50 in the night had got knocked down by this vehicle, the 15 year old boy was unable to control the speed at once as such. The mother and daughter who were knocked down in this instance had been dragged about 15 metres with the vehicle itself and they were then fallen near this vehicle with severe injuries. The said student who immediately stopped the vehicle had then sped away from the scene accompanied by the other occupants of the vehicle, in another hired vehicle. Thinking that a problem could emerge if the police came to know that the accident had taken place by a driver who was a minor not fit enough to obtain the driving licence, the younger brother of the student's father had come forward admitting that it was he who was at the driving seat.

However, witnesses in Dematagoda area realised that what he was saying was a fib. They had then informed the police who arrived there to investigate the incident about it and subsequently the police were able to arrest the student as well as his mother when they were in their Grandpass house.

The 15 year old student was studying at an international school in Colombo and was Mohomed Fariz Farook by name while his 34 year old mother was Shakila Bhanu. The student's father who happened to be a millionaire was a proprietor of a garment factory in Kekirawa. During this said incident he had been away on a sojourn overseas regarding business matters and he had given the key of the vehicle concerned belonging to him, over to his wife. Though the wife was in possession of a driving licence, on a number of instances she had permitted her child who was a minor to drive the vehicle without exercising any responsibility which thus ended up in this tragic accident.

The student who is alleged to be responsible over this accident and has been taken into custody yesterday (17) was produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate this month while the lady who is supposed to be his mother who had aided and abetted in permitting the student to drive on this occasion has been remanded until the 25th of this month on orders of the courts.
