Wasim Thajudeen's murder, against Namal (video)
Because of a tense situation which developed in the afternoon today in parliament there were
continuous arguments that flared up as a consequence of which there were a number of occasions of attempted fisticuffs and ultimately parliamentary sessions had to be postponed a number of times.
This commotion took place when MP Mujabir Rahuman of the UNP began to make his comments this afternoon after MP Namal Rajapaksa addressed the House during the debate. Mr. Mujabir Rahuman brought out matters relating to the Wasim Thajudeen murder to the House and made a speech by dragging in the Rajapaksa family and proceeded to run a video where MP Namal was portrayed as some form of evidence in this connection.
On that occasion Mahinda supporters on the opposite side had displayed their opposition to it. Subsequently when Mr. Rahuman was speaking, the Alliance MPs Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha and Indika Anuruddha had approached MP Mujabir Rahuman to assault him. Some MPs of the United Alliance had come near MP Mujabir Rahuman and had behaved in a manner that obstructed his speech. In that instance Mr. Mujabir Rahuman had been threatened. In order to control the situation, some MPs of the government Party too had come near Mr. Mujabir Rahuman's seat.
Whatever it is, MP Mr. Edward Gunasekera who was presiding had decided to postpone proceedings of parliament for 10 minutes. Subsequently the parliament once more resumed with Speaker Mr. Karu Jayasuriya in his seat. At that point the Speaker mentioned that he would make his statement after watching the video concerned. Whatever it is, Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs expressing his ideas said that a formal investigation has to be carried out with regard to the said incident. The Minister further said that this was the first occasion when this type of threatening occured at a time when an MP was voicing his opinion in parliament.
MP Mr. Dinesh Goonawardena expressing his ideas in this respect said that since a court case is proceeding with reference to the Wasim Thajudeen murder, statements uttered by Mr. Mujabir Rahuman should be removed from the Hansard. In any case, a heated moment sprang up once again in parliament. The Speaker had on a number of instances attempted to bring the situation under control.
