A fourth party involvement in suicide of Pannala mother and daughter

Apart from the lover engaged in the Army who was involved in the suicide case of the mother and daughter of Wadumunnegedera area, Hawaeliya, Pannala who had taken their lives at

two different places in their house, which incident was reported last week, another lover is connected to this incident as revealed in police investigations.

It was reported that it was only the deceased mother and daughter who lived in this house and the deceased daughter 20 year old Vishwani Sandatharaka was involved in a love affair with a young man who is serving in the Army named Chathuranga who happened to be a close relative of this girl. It also came to be known that the reason for the death of the girl was the worry caused by him to get married to him.

However, according to what is exposed from the 8 letters written before suicide of the mother and daughter, another youth is involved in this matter. The deceased girl had dropped this lover Chathuranga and had been carrying on with another young man and Chathuranga had threatened the girl to forget the new lover and to get married to him and since she had thought that it was not something that could be done, she had ultimately come to a decision of taking her life, it was reported. On one note that they had left behind, it was said:

         "During the past period I and my daughter faced so much trouble. Can't live by seeing all this. I can't wait seeing my daughter suffering either. If I die .... daughter also will suffer. Can't isolate daughter. We are responsible for our own deaths. Nobody is responsible for it. We tried to live without being a worry to others. But now we see that it's not possible".

Apart from that, this is what is seen in the note written to the lover:

                                                                             "Chathuranga ... I loved you. You hurt me. You listened to your parents and blamed my mother a lot. Chathu aiyye .... you definitely must get married. Take your wedding nicely. I have put one lakh in the bank. The gold items you gave me are on top of the cupboard. Take those also. It was I who made the mistake. Don't trouble that one (other lover). Do that for my sake. It is to him that I have given my love. You know how much I loved you. But it's you who lost all that. I can't marry you".

Though this girl has had a romance with an Army soldier called Chathuranga who happens to be a relative of hers, it is said that there was opposition from both sides. One of the reasons for this opposition is that the young man was a blood relation of the girl. It was learned that Chathuranga was the son of the eldest son of the eldest daughter of the deceased girl's grandmother. Though the romance had gone on for a period of about 4 years, after it had gone on the rocks recently, she had got involved in another connection. But Chathuranga had opposed that new connection.

What the villagers say is that the boy harassed her. On certain occasions he had come to this house and had assaulted her, it is reported. On the night of the 8th when the mother and daughter hanged themselves, this lover too had come on the motor bike and had stayed till about 11 in the night. He had made threats that night too. The following day on seeing the two dead bodies he had drunk poison and is now in hospital, it is reported. Since it has been indicated that these suicides were committed by themselves as mentioned in the notes left behind by them, other than an enquiry from external parties, the police say that no enquiry could be done further as a result.
