How Kekirawa NDB Bank robbery was foiled ....

because of security who battled with life at stake!

A hand-grenade which was in the possession of a
person who came to rob the NDB Bank situated in the centre of Kekirawa Town during afternoon hours yesterday had burst in the same place and this person as well as a security guard who tried to foil his bid passed away most tragically as a consequence.

The marauder had come on a motor cycle in the company of another person and had tried to enter the bank wearing a helmet with the face covered. On that occasion the security guard who was standing in front of the other security guard had signalled the man to remove the helmet before entering. However he had turned a blind eye at this gesture and still proceeded to enter. At that point the security guard who approached the marauder had bravely pushed aside the man and taken steps to close the door of the bank and thus the marauder and the security guard had then been wrestling with each other.

Anxious to see what was happening outside, a group of people including the bank manager had come to the spot at that moment. The marauder who had become shocked on noticing that he had been cornered had attempted to throw a hand-grenade hidden on his waist towards the bank at which instance the security guard had dealt a blow at the hand of this person concerned. Right at that moment the hand-grenade had burst in a frightening manner. As a result both the robber and the said security guard had collapsed in a blood bath and breathed their last on the spot itself. In the process the bank manager and five customers who came there were hospitalised with injuries.

Those in the surrounding area who did not leave room for the accomplice who came on the motor cycle with the deceased to escape managed to get at him and hand him over to the police. The deceased security guard is a 28 year old father of one child living in Kekirawa named Esala Jayasingha while the robber who died is a 27 year old youth from Galgamuwa named Asanka Balasuriya. The police were able to find information that he was connected to a robbery of a finance establishment in Dambulla a few days before this. Two special police teams have been deployed to start investigations in connection with the incident.
