The prices of vegetables, rice and big onions soar

It is reported and learnt that at this time the prices of vegetables, rice and big onions have climbed up to very high levels.

The market sources believe that the reasons for

these prices to soar is because of the inability for the local farmers to produce sufficient quantities to meet the demand and also as the import taxes of these items have not been reduced.

All varieties of vegetables have been increased by 30 to 60 percent while the prices of a kilogram of Big onions have increased to rupees 180 to 200.The price of normal samba rice kilogram is between rupees 95 to 100 while a kilogram of high quality samba rice is around rupees 120- 140 while a kilogram of red rice kekulu  variety is between  rupees 70 to75.

It is also reported that the stocks of big onions at the Dambulla economic trade centre have all been sold out  about a month ago.
