Chairman Dr. Nilanga who opposed drug addicts .... out
Chairman of Dangerous Drugs Control Board, Dr. Nilanga Samarasingha says that a person named Jagath Wijeweera, Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Order has sent him a fax
message stating that he had been removed from his position. He says that he has no reason to relinquish his duties from his position of Chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Control Board because of a fax message which bears no date or signature.
It was he who voiced a strong opinion at the past general election to refrain from granting nominations to drug racketeers in this country and in the process he faced even threats to his life. During the space of 10 months of service he had even launched a project of compiling information about notorious drug racketeers and had also been engaged in establishing a South Asian Intelligence Information Unit in association with South Asian countries relating to information of drug-trafficking and several other activities.
According to powers bestowed on the Minister by Chapter 03 of the Act of the Dangerous Drugs Control National Board, 1984 No. 11 and with the agreement of the President, Dr. Samarasingha has been informed in writing without a signature of the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Order and Prison Reforms that Mr. Sirisena Herath has been assigned the Post of Chairman of Dangerous Drugs Control National Board. This is what the doctor says about this: "Mr. Jagath Wijeweera is the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Order and it is in his name that the fax message has been communicated. It has no date and neither a signature.
There are two methods to remove me from my service. One of those is that I should resign on my own. If not I should be sacked. Till then I have no reason to resign on my own. When I was already functioning as the Chairman, another person was appointed as the Chairman. Why should I resign for that reason? The other point is that upto now I have not been notified about this. This happened during a period when the President was not in the country. Even the Prime Minister is not aware of this. What is in this fax message which has no date or signature is something like this. 'I am happy to inform that Mr. Sirisena Herath has been appointed in the capacity of the Chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Control Board'.
I would not even dream that a henchman would be posted here and the public would be pressurized and that the government would do something contrary to what the the public aspires. But if both of them are not in favour; if the President, the Prime Minister do not like ... I will not stay in this seat for even one moment".
