A domestic service based on Katunayaka - Ratmalana ...
affording opportunity to ....
travel all over the country ... shortly
The government is preparing to launch a
domestic airline service linking the Katunayaka Bandaranaika International Airport and the Ratmalana Colombo Airport. While a proposal in this respect has been brought forward to the government, it is proposed to transport locals and foreigners to minor airports found at various locations all over the country and small airports expected to be established in future as well via these two above said airports with the aid of this aforementioned project.
Though at present a service whereby light aircrafts could be made to land on water is in operation for foreigners with a private company taking a major part in it, as an exorbitant price has to be paid for its journeys, it has not become popular as such. A discussion had taken place at the parliament committee hall day-before-yesterday (24) with the participation of Prime Minister Mr. Ranil Wickremasingha in relation to the matter of establishing a profitable and productive domestic airline service. It was at the discussion regarding the Megapolis Urban Project. The necessity of modernising the Katunayaka Airport in the case of providing infra-structure facilities for domestic services too has come up at the discussion while technical experts have pointed out the necessity to increase the extent of the runway of the airport too.
