IGP ordered to pay compensation to two JVP activists arrested for pasting posters 

The Supreme Court ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to pay Rs.25,000/- each to two JVP activists as compensation on behalf of the state and ruled that police had arbitrarily arrested the two petitioners while they were pasting posters against the previous government in the Dematagoda area in 2009.

The posters contained the wording “stop media suppression and establish democracy.”

The two petitioners who were active members of the JVP had cited the IGP , the Borella Police personnel as respondents.

For the respondents Attorneys at Law JC Weliamuna and Pulasthi Hewamanna appeared before the three Judge Bench of the Supreme court, It was revealed that the arrests of the two who were detained could not be justified under the provisions of the law.
