I STILL ENTERTAIN ALLIANCE SECRETARIES

- ELECTION COMMISSIONER SAYS

Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya, Commissioner of Elections says that a verdict on the the issue that
has cropped up regarding the Secretary of the United People's Freedom Alliance at this General Election would be cleared up after the General Election and that until such time they will be accepted as Secretaries. He says that though the chairman of that Party, what Maithripala Sirisena has informed in writing saying that he would be removing those Secretaries is in accordance with the law, accepting such a change being effected prior to the election could turn out to be an advantage for one faction and that  therefore a verdict on that matter would be notified after the election.

As such, he also mentioned that what is valid for him in the General Election is the signature of Mr. Susil Premajayanth as the Secretary of the Party when nominating MPs of the United People's Freedom Alliance and if not whether it is that of Professor Vishwa Warnapala's signature which should be considered for this matter which is something that would be reasoned out after the voting is over. Whatever it is, according to the opinion of the legal field, the weight is more on the side of the commissioner to accept the name of Professor Vishwa Warnapala in this context. Under such circumstances, an opportunity is available for President Maithripala Sirisena to select a person from the national list as and how he wishes. If the UNP acquires a larger number of seats for the UNP not sufficient enough for them to establish a government, there is information to say that a group of MPs of the Alliance is ready to fill this void in such a case and a dialogue is now brewing in political circles that it would facilitate matters by increasing the numbers of Maithripala supporters to solve such a situation.
