Further fresh information has come streaming in by now about the incident where a 15 year old

schoolgirl was gang-raped by a group of youth of Meetiyagoda, Ambalangoda.

The girl had been directed to be victimized for gang-rape on the instigation of the lover's sister in order to appease a personal revenge. The woman who directed the gang-rape had entered into marriage once and had later been divorced but had been associating various men from time to time and had been thus living a playboy existence. She and her younger brother had lived together with others in the family at a house in Dikwella area. This woman was aware that the said schoolgirl was having an affair with her younger bother and had on a number of occasions even spoken to her over the phone of the brother.

The brother as well as the schoolgirl were not in favour of the loose life of this woman. In the process, this woman had tried to maintain an illicit relationship with a certain relative known to this schoolgirl. After news about this fell on the girl's ears she had lost her temper. Since she was having ideas of uniting with her lover's family in the future, she had thought that the behaviour of her lover's sister could turn out to be a problem and she had one day when agitated over this issue had scolded the woman saying, "because of your harlotry I won't be able to go on the road!" The lover's playboy sister and the schoolgirl had on a number of occasions during the past week had exchanged harsh words over the phone on this matter.

Because of this issue the playboy woman had thought of taking revenge from her in a different manner. That was by selling this schoolgirl from time to time to people whom she used to associate. Last 16th evening she had come to the Batapola Ambagaha Junction where the girl was living and the woman had broken the news that her brother who was the girl's lover had taken poison and had asked her to come with her to go and see the boy when the girl had forgotten the conflict she had with the woman and had got upset over the news. At that moment since only the girl was in the house she had told the woman that she would notify her mother and then come. The woman had then responded saying, "no need to inform your mother about these things ... you come quickly with me". So saying she had taken steps to escort the girl from Batapola to Ambalangoda in a CTB bus. Later the woman had made her get into a three-wheeler at Ambalangoda bus halt in her company and some other young men who said that they were friends too had got into this same three-wheeler. The woman had then gone to several tourist guest houses with these men. However, the owners there on seeing a minor had refused lodging. Whatever it is, the woman had subsequently taken the girl to another place rented out on a daily basis and after posting her in a room there had told her to remain there until she brings some food to eat. So saying she had taken away the keys with her after which on a set plan 4 young boys had entered the room and had raped the girl. On police investigations it was revealed that the woman had handed over the keys of the room after taking money from these youth.

When the girl was being raped she is supposed to have lost consciousness. When she came to her senses, the other 2 youth had raped the girl from time to time till dawn, the suspects had confessed. When they had left the girl she had with the support of neighbours informed the police and had got herself hospitalized.

The 3 suspects connected to the incident have already been taken into custody. The main suspect was arrested at Katunayaka Airport when trying to escape and what he had said was that he was not aware of this story of a grudge and that the girl was offered to him by the woman saying, "there's a new item". The main suspect taken into custody is a 22 year old person known as Channa Putha, who had served in Dubai and had come to Sri Lanka on a holiday and was a resident of Hambanthota Meetiagoda. Meetiyagoda Police say that among those taken into custody are a three-wheel driver of 30 years and a father of 3 children while the other happens to be a 25 year old fisherman. Elpitiya Police Superintendent Mr. Dilshan Nagahawatta says that several police teams have been directed to arrest one other suspect and the said lover's elder sister the 28 year old woman.

The schoolgirl who had been rendered helpless because of this incident is still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
