The 20th amendment finally gets cabinet approval
The new draft proposal presented by the President
Maithripala Sirisena to have the forthcoming elections in the new electoral system was presented to the parliament on the 08th instant. The cabinet had accepted this proposal which was hanging in the balance with speculations for some time.
A special cabinet meeting was summoned by the President on the 08th instant and the facts in the new draft proposal were discussed at length.
Under the new electoral reforms it was suggested to increase the number of seat in the parliament from 225 to 255 seats. This was objected to by the United National Party. At the discussion it was agreed upon to have the original number of seats of 225 with the 20th amendment to the constitution brought in.
Hence this proposal is likely to be passed in Parliament. The knowledgeable sources had commented on this.
