48 year old Sergeant Gunapala Prasad Pushpakumara was in service at Settikulama Police and his wife Mrs. Samanthi Rajamuni (46) had this to say, giving her evidence:
"We got married after a love affair in the year 1992. We have two daughters after the marriage. I look after the two children without going to work. My husband worked in the police. My husband last served Settikulama Police as a sergeant. My husband didn't have any mental sickness. About 3 months before my husband disappeared he used to keep on thinking after coming home. When asked why, he didn't say anything. The whole time he wanted to be alone. Every month he comes home. He came home the last time on April 11th 2012 and saying he's going to work on April 14th set off from home at about 6.15 in the morning. When calling at about 7.30 in the morning he said he was in Kurunegala. The phone didn't work when I called in the evening. When I called the police I was told that he hadn't reported to work. The following day around 10.30 in the morning mahaththaya spoke and said that he didn't go to work the day before. That he went to see his mother. He said that he'd be going to work that day. But when I spoke to aiyya he said that he hasn't come to see mother. From that day onwards, even to contact him over the phone .... the phone didn't work. When I called Settikulama Police I was told that he has not come.
I got a letter on 23rd April dated 17th, posted from Nuwara Eliya. On it was written, 'I haven't done any wrong to anybody .... didn't rob .... can't bend down to anybody. Destiny has crossed me. So look after those two children". Though I assumed that he may have done some harm to himself, I got no news. When I got this letter I made a complaint to Mawathagama Police. Since I got no consolation after that, I made a complaint to the police 'sahana mediriya'. I did poojas everywhere. I made vows. But I got no information. After 3 years last June 3rd night Mawathagama Police came and until they informed me about this I had got no information whatsoever.
