What Vasu said was not an indecent word ....
this is interpreted in dictionary as 'gediya'
It is the same meaning in Ranil's 'wattakka gediya' talk too
- Bandula explains
Former Minister of Education, Bandula Gunawardena has given an explanation at a rupavahini
programme yesterday saying that the word p*... used by Vasudeva Nanayakkara which created a sensation in parliament recently is not an obscene word and that there are enough of such words that have been used in the Sinhala Language in a decent way.
What he further points out is that when considering the 'welichcha wattakka' talk that Ranil said in response to Vasu's 'p*....' word is that both words imply the same connotation. He argues that Ranil has asked someone and has said the same word in a different way. Bandula Gunawardena explained this in the following manner:
"Actually this is not a bad word. In each region there are instances where the same word is being used with various interpretations by each such ethnic community. For example there is a verse in Damgetamaalawa running as "Ataseeyak ethi sathdik ethi paiya ...". It talks about those having 800 joints (ataseeyak ethi sandi eththavuda ...). So how can this be an obscene word? In the Gunasena Dictionary the meaning for 'p*...' is given as 'gediya, palaya, pesuna gediya or anything similar to a gediya'. Because of that Mr. Ranil Wickremasingha called Vasu a 'wattakka gediya' after having asked some thero and had then replied with the same word. Look here ..... 'p*.... ' is referred to as 'gediya, palaya, pesuna gediya, anything similar to gediya .....".
