The cause for voting against the issue of treasury bills was because of a conflict between Nimal and Dinesh
The leader of the house and Minister of Plantations Lakshman Kiriella had quipped in
Parliament that the members in the opposition have no faith and do not listen to the Leader of the Opposition Nimal Siripala de Silva. In the morning at the time this proposal of Treasury bill was made known the leader of the opposition Nimal Siripala de Silva had given his total consent as the salaries of the government servants need to be made and payments need to be made to contractors who had completed development projects. But alarmingly in the evening he had changed his promise.
He had earlier spoken on behalf of the entire opposition. In the evening he had refused to go for a voting and was not prepared to for a division and had gone away. The Member of the Progressive Socialist Front Ajith Perera had come and had canvassed votes of the majority and voted against the bill.
On the previous day at the meeting of the leaders of all parties Dinesh Gunawardena had promised that for the issue of the treasury bills he would not go against.
In that event when Nimal Siripala de Silva as opposition leader had promised to vote for the bill and then decides against, it goes to show clearly that the opposition has split into two sections.
