Opposition of the MC J’Kotte, against the proposal to sell the present premises

A proposal has been made to demolish the existing building where the Sri Jayawardenapura,

Kotte Municipal council is housed, sell the huge extend of land and reconstruct a new building at a location close by. To this proposal tabled by the Chairman of the Sri Jayawardenapura, MC Kotte, all the opposition Members of the Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Municipal council have objected. This they have said as the intention is somewhat of a business deal. The proposal is the sole discretion of the Mayor they have accused for the proposal.

The leader of the opposition Sugath Appuhamy had quipped that it was only after he was appointed as Mayor that the entire building was renovated at a cost of rupees three hundred lakhs and hence what is the necessity for him to bring a proposal of this nature.

The Opposition leader had emphasised that the Mayor is indulged in a land ‘mafia’ business and he is aiming to benefit out of this deal. He had further quipped that a new plan of the building to be constructed has been drawn and it is to cost a huge sum of rupees 900 million.

The leader of the Opposition also had emphasised that this building is having a tremendous archaeological value, hence it needs to be preserved at any cost and this proposal is somewhat of a ‘laughter’ bringing proposal to everyone. He also had said the Mayor has spent already a sum of rupees 12 million on charges for pre construction formalities and consultant and advisory fees.He had pointed out that these expenses have been borne even before a foundation stone for the proposed building has been laid.
