National government on the horizon New portfolios for SLFP

Several revolutionary changes are expected to take place within the agitated political
environmental situation these days, within the next few days. As such, after a number of decades it is a very significant change to see that the country would be ruled by a Sri Lankan National Government. While this National Government would be a combination of both the UNP and the SLFP, Ministers of both parties are expected to function simultaneously. This decision was arrived at the SLFP Central Committee meeting held yesterday under the leadership of President Maithreepala about this change. The subject of a National Government was brought forward by S.B. Dissanayaka and was seconded by Reginald Cooray. Though everybody gave their consent to this, former Minister Kumar Welgama alone expressed his refusal to accept the proposition. Though there still is no final decision on this matter about the number of Ministers to be allocated to the SLFP in the National Government, sometime back it was assumed that the number could be somewhere between 15 or 17.

While SLFP seniors such as Susil, Nimal and Anura were assigned work under the committee under the leadership of the President, they would be going into action in this respect at the earliest. In the process what Minister Rajitha said at the Cabinet media confrontation was that the new government would not be heading towards a general election without the promises of the 100 Day Action Plan being fulfilled.  As such, the General Election too has been postponed because a practical problem has cropped up about the difficulty of a new election system being established at once.
