Maldivian Foreign Minister anticipates Sri Lanka to vindicate their lost prestige
It was reported in the local and international media that the former president of the Maldive
islands Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by their courts as he was proved guilty for charges made against him for an offence.
As this news spread to the international the country had faced a huge humilation and embarassment in front of those foreign countries which they feel as more than tarnishing their good image they have had already established in the world.
The foreign Minister of Maldive Islands Dunya Maamun participating in a media briefing in Colombo had made a plea to our government to help them to clear the image tarnished by the incident of the imprisonment of their former president Mohamed Nasheed although the present government had not in any way influenced the courts in favour of this decision.
She also had reminded that on earlier occasions Maldivian governments had been with Sri Lanka when we faced certain issues like committing war crimes during the latter stages of the concluded ethnic war in front of the international. She had insisted that efforts of Sri Lankan government to explain matters to the International would to a large extent help to restore the previous respectability via our intervention. In the context of the above it would help the already existing cordial and friendly links between the two countries to prevail.
